PEI New Food Product Award Presented to PEI Berries At Food Island Day
Product Award during Food Island Day, the first event put on by the newly formed Food Island
PEI Berries Ltd. uses whole blueberries to provide consumers with the greatest nutritional benefit
of the fruit’s seeds, skin, and juice. Since wild blueberries have more antioxidants than cultivated
berries, Pure Blueberries fruit puree has tremendous health benefits. The process used to
create the Pure Blueberries fruit puree occurs in a closed system at low temperatures to protect
the antioxidants from coming into contact with heat, friction, and oxygen, which are detrimental
to the nutrients in the fruit.
PEI Berries’ Pure Blueberries fruit puree was one of five innovative products up for this award,
which also included Bottled Bar Clams by Annand Clams, Ahiflower Oil by Natures Crops International, Gahan Blueberry Ale by PEI Brewing Co., and Ewesual Sheep Gouda Cheese by
Glasgow Glen Farm.
Food Island Day was designed as a one-day symposium to bring together all Islanders with a
vested interested in the food industry, including food growers, processors, food tourism operators,
and product developers.
“Prince Edward Island continues to be recognized for the high quality food products delivered to
consumers by our hard working Island producers. It is important, as a government, to continue to
support innovation and expansion in our agriculture and fisheries sectors,” said Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Alan McIsaac. “The Province of Prince Edward Island will continue to
partner with industry as we work together to grow our primary industries.”
The decision to present the PEI New Food Product Award at Food Island Day was an easy one,
according to John Rowe, President of the Food Island Partnership. He says, “Food Island Day is
about food and food innovation. What better way to celebrate food and to support the growth of
the food sector in the island than to award PEI Berries for its fantastic Pure Blueberries fruit
Held at Clinton Hills, a beautifully restored 1959 rustic barn in Clinton, Food Island Day event
featured a locally inspired luncheon provided by Canada’s Test Kitchen and a number of guest
speakers, including celebrity chef Vikram Vij of CBC Dragon’s Den, who delivered the keynote
address to the sold-out crowd.
Sebastian Manago, CEO of Food Island Partnership considers the event a great success. He says,
“Every seat was filled with an individual interested in the growth of PEI’s food sector. We
couldn’t be happier about the overwhelming amount of support we’ve received from stakeholders,
especially industry representatives, and members of the general public. We sold out much
more quickly than we anticipated and given this, we plan on finding a larger venue for next
year’s Food Island Day.”
