The PEI Food Cluster – Canada’s Food Island

High-quality food products, dedicated primary producers and food entrepreneurs, and a bountiful/pristine Island setting combined with a spirit of collaboration and concentration of food cluster support agencies has positioned Prince Edward Island as a leading place to grow a food company and food tourism operation.

A strong network of support agencies provides specialized services to the ongoing growth of the food industry in Prince Edward Island:

Food Island Partnership

Food Island Partnership plays a key role as a first point of contact and central coordinating body for food companies and new partnership opportunities within the PEI food cluster. Project examples include:

  • Coordination of the Fall Flavours festival in collaboration with the tourism and food industries in the province.
  • Partner and marketing lead for the Certified Island Beef brand in collaboration with the Cattle Producers of PEI and Atlantic Beef Products. The brand returns premium prices to Island cattle producers and helps solidify Prince Edward’s foothold in premium beef markets. At present over 82 cow calf and feedlot producers contribute to the brand.
  • Coordination of a food working group with government agency partners and a food cluster working group with Canada’s Smartest Kitchen and BioFoodTech Centre to improve alignment of supports for the food industry.
  • Working closely with industry groups to market PEI as Canada’s Food Island.

  • Emergence

    Emergence is a virtual business incubator focused on food-to-pharma. Companies receive comprehensive support customized to their needs and benefit from experienced mentorship, 70/30% cost shared specialist services and established networks.

    Canada’s Smartest Kitchen

    Canada’s Smartest Kitchen’s multidisciplinary team delivers market-validated solutions to food companies of all sizes. Their SMART Process for food product development supports startups and multinationals alike with a customizable suite of services that can inject value at any stage in a product’s pathway to market. By placing client needs and confidentiality above all else, they provide results that resonate.


    BIO|FOOD|TECH provides professional technical services to the food and bioprocessing industries from concept to pilot to market through three integrated business divisions: food technology, bioscience technology, and lab services.

    Protein Supercluster

    The Protein Supercluster proposal has been successful in the Federal Government’s ISI (Innovation Supercluster Initiative) Competition - one of five successful clusters announced in February. As a member of the Protein Supercluster, Food Island Partnership will support companies in developing and commercializing market focused value-added protein derived products through projects with companies within the region.


    The National Research Council (NRC) is the Government of Canada's premier research and technology organization (RTO). Working with clients and partners, they provide innovation support, strategic research, and scientific and technical services

    PEI BioAlliance

    The Prince Edward Island BioAlliance is a private sector-led not-for-profit organization dedicated to building the bioscience industry on Prince Edward Island. By working collaboratively with our partners, we have created a unique environment that promotes excellence in research and provides strong leadership and business support to companies at all stages.
