BioFoodTech receives laboratory re-accreditation
(Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Dec. 21) BioFoodTech plays an important role in the continued success of Canada’s Food Island and its re-accreditation allows the Island’s food and bioscience sector to remain confident of the high-quality services provided through the company.
“The expertise and facilities at BioFoodTech were instrumental in supporting the launch and early stage growth of our Honibe branded products,” said John Rowe, chair of the Food Island Partnership. “The availability of world class product development support is essential in supporting the ongoing growth of our value added food sector in Prince Edward Island.”
BioFoodTech is owned by the Province of Prince Edward Island and operates as a subsidiary company of Innovation PEI. It provides food safety analysis services required for export to national and international markets and support for new product and process development. BioFoodTech operates on contract to industry clients mostly in Prince Edward Island but also obtains export revenue through contracts for clients regionally and nationally.
Since its incorporation in Prince Edward Island in 1987, BioFoodTech has worked with the vast majority of Island food companies. Through the food technology support of BioFoodTech, Royal Star Foods Ltd. introduced a new value-added lobster concentrate to its line of products. The Star of the Sea Lobster Concentrate is available frozen and is an excellent way for chefs at home and in restaurants to add 100 per cent lobster flavours to their creations. BioFoodTech also assisted PEI Juice Works Ltd. in the development of its unique juice. The two types of juice products – Wild Blueberry and Rhubarb Juice and Wild Blueberry and Tart Cherry Juice – are being sold locally and exported to Asia.
“BioFoodTech provides accredited food safety analysis services to Prince Edward Island’s seafood and agrifood processing industry enabling producers to export their excellent food products to national and international markets,” said BioFoodTech’s Executive Director, Jim Smith. “As an organization, BioFoodTech is pleased to be able to provide the Island’s food sector with reliable, stable services of the highest international standard as shown through the accreditation process.”
The accreditation process for BioFoodTech involves visits by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) technical experts every two years who examine the lab's technical competence in every test that is on its Scope of Accreditation. SCC audits the quality system to ensure that internationally-recognized procedures are followed precisely, that results are accurate and that complete records are kept. SCC also examines the results from the many Proficiency Programs in which BioFoodTech participates.
“BioFoodTech provides an important foundation for our food industry in Prince Edward Island, adding value to our agriculture and marine food resources and boosting our provincial economy,” said Minister of Economic Development and Tourism Heath MacDonald. “The Province of Prince Edward Island will continue to support market and product development opportunities that place our province among the world leaders in food production and innovation.”
