Atlantic Canada’s First Food Accelerator Launches

Charlottetown, PE - Atlantic Canada’s first food accelerator launches to support Prince Edward Island food businesses.  Food Island Partnership unveiled the new program, Food Propel, at an orientation session on September 11th, in Charlottetown PEI.

“Over the last few years, PEI has truly established a reputation as a culinary destination, a growing exporter of quality food products, and a forward-looking food business incubator. The Government of Canada is pleased to support Food Island Partnership with an investment of $200,000 to help develop and deliver important programming like Food Propel and Food Xcel,” said Sean Casey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard and Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

Companies participating in Food Propel will benefit from a dedicated mentor team, workshops led by industry experts, market travel, and a cost shared growth fund to assist with strategic investments to grow their business. The program will help companies that have strong motivation to grow to successfully capture new opportunities – such as expanding into new markets and launching new products.  Six Prince Edward Island food businesses will be selected to participate in the one-year program based on their fit with the program’s objectives.

“On Canada’s Food Island it is essential that we provide support to seafood companies across the Island grow, innovate, and add jobs. Food Propel is an excellent way to help Island companies achieve their goals by providing a wide range of services that help address many facets of business and product development, and make the most of existing opportunities,” said Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Robert Henderson.

Food Propel was developed after the success of the Food Xcel program initially delivered in 2016/2017. Food Xcel had 39 attendees, seven finalists, and helped with the creation of many new food companies in Prince Edward Island. Food Island Partnership will be launching Food Xcel 2018 in November.

“In responding to the needs of our food industry, we understand that there are unique needs for food companies at different stages of their development.  Beyond the Food Propel program, we have coordinated the Food Xcel start-up competition for aspiring food entrepreneurs and recently held Food Automation Atlantic event that was attended by many of our mid to large size food companies” said Bryan Inglis, CEO of Food Island Partnership.
