What We Do

Applied Research

Innovation in the global food industry extends well beyond traditional food products, from advancements in crop attributes and processing technologies, to functional food ingredients and bio-energy applications. The Food Island Partnership facilitates the application of new technology through research, helping to identify product/market opportunities, and working with all levels to create profitable business models. This means conducting new concept and technology assessments, feasibility and benchmarking studies, helping to fill the resource gap by providing access to market intelligence and industry analysis, and identifying areas where new supply chain collaboration opportunities exist.

PROJECT EXAMPLE 1

PEI Beef 5 Year Strategic Outlook

Stakeholders feel that now is a good time to look into the future to take advantage of opportunities and determine where they want to be in the next 5 years.  This study is to serve as the basis of many different strategic plans and / or business plans along the value chain: Cow/calf producers, Feedlots, Processing plant, value add processor, and industry associations.

The overall objective is for the industry to set their goals collectively and create an integrated strategy as well as determining the economic impact of the beef industry in PEI.

The study will be focused on the PEI industry, but viewed in the context of a Canadian industry. The five-year outlook should include roles and responsibilities and short and medium term recommendations.

This study will consider all levels of the value chain in the beef industry including: producers, processors, stakeholders and markets.
The completion of the study will outline recommendations and roles and responsibilities for all players.

PROJECT EXAMPLE 2

ECODA

ECODA aims to benefit oilseed growers, processors and exporters in Eastern Canada by establishing oilseed crop options that match regional factors and market needs. When oilseed growers succeed, then processors and exporters can prosper too.

In turn, these combined successes will contribute to Canada maintaining and strengthening its global market share for soybeans, canola, and associated oilseed products. To achieve these benefits, ECODA, with the help of its partners, has pursued two objectives related to soybeans and canola:

  • To expand existing markets and develop new opportunities for oilseeds grown in Eastern Canada.
  • To facilitate soybean and canola research by choosing innovative projects tied to national and international market opportunities.

We share research results with growers and communicate with industry through workshops, technology transfer activities, partner outreach and ECODA’s website.
